What do you believe is the greatest innovation to affect the events industry in the past year?
The new iPad is a fantastic new resource that our company has been using to promote our services. It’s portability and ease of use has provided us with a great new tool in presenting and delivering our message to clients.

Where do you find inspiration?
I get ideas and inspiration almost any where I go and often when I least expect it! Travelling provides a wonderful opportunity to see what people are doing and what they find of value in other geographic areas. I find inspiration in art, architecture, and fashion.

What excites you most about the year ahead in the events industry or your personal business?
The opportunity to learn and grow to be better at what I do both creatively and as a business. The great thing about our industry is that it’s constantly changing. It’s important to stay in tune, connect, and continually learn. The alternative is stagnation and then extinction!

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
I’ve really spent time thinking about this and I’ve been given so much excellent business advise over the years it’s hard to determine any single tip that was most valuable. What I do know is that my best business lessons regarding the importance of integrity, professionalism, and dependability, were learned from my father and brother while working summers in our family business while growing up. Those are lessons that I call upon and use every single day

Deborah Borsum is co-owner of The Meetinghouse Companies, Inc., a special event production company whose in-house services include theme décor, floral design, audio-visual, entertainment booking and production coordination. Her company has won multiple awards for excellence in special event production, including the prestigious Gala, Esprit, BizBash and NICE awards.

In March 2010, Borsum was inducted into the Event Solutions Hall of Fame, along with her business partner, Robert Sivek. ISES International awarded Borsum with the Klaus Inkamp Lifetime Achievement Award, named her International Volunteer of the Year and has awarded her with the Spirit of Excellence Mettle Attitude Award. Her company has also been inducted into Meeting Professional International’s supplier Hall of Fame.
